RSS Feeds can Increase Traffic

RSS-2RRS

Did you realize that RSS Feeds can potentially step-up traffic to your new new blogs and websites? When you have a new site you will pretty much try anything to spark some initial traffic. You need to do this to get the ball rolling with links, and also as a means of getting “spidered” or noticed by the search engines. These techniques are not specifically laid out in the Alex Jeffreys list building course, so I am posting them here for reference.

In this post we are going to discuss the use of adding a blog RSS feed to accounts like your MyMSN and MyYahoo. I am not sure statistically if this is a sound method of creating traffic, but it makes sense because not only do these sites provide social proof, but they are high traffic sites and get frequent visits from search engine robots. Social proof is a big part of what Alex Jeffreys teaches in his training. This in turn should mean that your content will be indexes quickly. This only takes a few minute to set up, so it sure won’t hurt to implement this tactic as part of your early traffic getting strategy.

Some people have trouble understanding exactly what an RSS feed is and does, so for the record just know that RSS is an acronym that has come to stand for Really Simple Syndication. Many people on the Internet are now using the web to gather news and information, and for this reason use these feeds as a means to staying on top of favorite subjects.

This means that if you have a blog that is getting good traffic and getting indexed for keywords in your niche, you stand a very good chance of having people subscribe to your RSS feed. This also will help with the distribution of your feeds across various networks, and is another reason why you should submit to as many RSS feed directories as you can. Keep track of your feed submissions, since you only want to submit to each directory only once.

RSS feeds work both ways, and just like links you can have outbound and inbound RSS feeds. You can see an example of an inbound RSS in the right hand sidebar of my feeder blog at http://blog.evanbeckonline.com. I use RSS news feeds to create consistent updates of relevant content to my blogs and websites using widgets. I also am going to test adding RSS feeds with a plugin to pages and posts for the same reason. These feeds will update the individual post and pages, and should keep the spiders coming back for more indexing. It is a way to refresh content on a continuous basis. In some ways you can think of it as being the same as updating older content. My thinking is that these feeds also pass some page rank.

Example of RSS Feed buttonI prefer to use WordPress as a platform to build sites because of the flexibility and tools available. WordPress actually has an RSS feature built into it, and you can see my “green” RSS button in the top right hand of the header of this site. If you have sites that do not have this feature, you can create RSS feeds on the fly using services like Feedage.com and RSSMix.com. These services are self explanatory and easy to use. I have used another service called Feedkiller to create a combined RSS mix feed for both this site and the Evan Beck Online Blog (my feeder blog) that I add to all my posts on both sites. I then created two feed buttons that looks like this (these are not active, but the one at the top of this post will take you to my live RSS feed):
